Spring monitoring data published by the St. Johns River Water Management District places hardness at the Marion County aquifer discharge point (Silver Glen Springs) at an average of 337.51 mg/L as CaCO3 over 44 samples collected from 2009 through 2025. Lake County spring monitoring shows comparable figures: Boulder Spring recorded 327 mg/L CaCO3 in January 2025 SJRWMD data. The USGS threshold for "very hard" water is 180 mg/L. Both readings are nearly double that threshold. Private residential wells in these counties draw from the same limestone aquifer and deliver water in the same hardness range. This article compiles the public monitoring records behind that pattern and explains what they mean for well owners in Ocala, Gainesville, Leesburg, and surrounding areas.
How we compiled this data
This article draws on three publicly accessible data sources:
- USGS National Water Information System (NWIS): The USGS maintains a searchable database of groundwater quality measurements at monitoring wells across Florida, available at waterdata.usgs.gov/fl/nwis/gw. The database documents hardness, iron, pH, total dissolved solids, and other parameters for Floridan Aquifer monitoring wells by county.
- St. Johns River Water Management District (SJRWMD) spring monitoring data: SJRWMD collects ongoing water quality samples from springs across its jurisdiction, which covers most of Central Florida east of the Suwannee watershed. Spring vent chemistry closely tracks Upper Floridan Aquifer groundwater chemistry because springs are direct discharge points for the aquifer. SJRWMD data is published through the University of South Florida Water Atlas at wateratlas.usf.edu.
- USGS Circular 1355 (National Water-Quality Assessment Program): The USGS published a comprehensive assessment of water quality in the Upper Floridan Aquifer and overlying surficial aquifers, covering 1993 to 2010, at pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1355/. That report characterizes regional water quality trends and documents mineral concentrations across the aquifer system.
Springs are used as aquifer proxies in this analysis because they provide long-term, regularly sampled records of groundwater chemistry that private well data does not. A spring vent discharges groundwater from the same limestone formation that supplies wells in the surrounding county. Hardness readings at a spring reflect the calcium and magnesium load that the water picked up as it moved through the limestone, which is the same process occurring in a private well drawing from the Upper Floridan. Well depth, local geology, and distance from the aquifer's recharge zone cause variation within each county, but the spring data establishes the aquifer's characteristic chemistry.
What "water hardness" means and how it is measured
Water hardness is the combined concentration of dissolved calcium and magnesium ions, expressed in milligrams per liter of calcium carbonate (mg/L CaCO3) or grains per gallon (gpg). The USGS uses the following classification at usgs.gov:

Water becomes hard as it dissolves calcium and magnesium from limestone and dolomite rock. The Floridan Aquifer is one of the most productive limestone aquifers in the world, and the dissolution process that makes it productive also makes the water it delivers consistently hard. The longer the contact time between water and limestone, generally the harder the water. Deeply confined portions of the aquifer, where water has traveled long flow paths through older limestone, tend to produce harder water than shallower or less confined zones.
County-level monitoring data: what springs tell us about the aquifer
The following table summarizes hardness data from SJRWMD spring monitoring records published through the USF Water Atlas. Each spring is a discharge point for the Upper Floridan Aquifer. The hardness values at the spring vent reflect the aquifer's groundwater chemistry for that area.

All recorded values fall in the "very hard" classification by USGS standards, and all are between 1.7 and 2.6 times the USGS threshold of 180 mg/L. The variation within the Marion County data (175 to 469 mg/L over 44 samples) reflects seasonal recharge patterns, depth of sampling, and differences between sampling locations along the spring run. The minimum value (175 mg/L) sits just below the "very hard" threshold but above the "hard" cutoff, meaning no sample has fallen into the soft or moderately hard range at this site.
For counties beyond Marion and Lake, the USGS NWIS database documents Floridan Aquifer monitoring well data across Orange, Alachua, Citrus, Sumter, and Volusia counties. Querying the database at waterdata.usgs.gov/fl/nwis/gw by county and filtering for hardness as CaCO3 consistently returns values above the "very hard" threshold of 180 mg/L for Upper Floridan Aquifer wells. The USGS NAWQA assessment (Circular 1355, covering 1993 to 2010) characterizes the Upper Floridan Aquifer water quality as consistently mineral-laden, with calcium and bicarbonate as the dominant ion pair across the aquifer's extent in Florida.
What "very hard" water at these concentrations does to a home
At 300 to 400 mg/L CaCO3, the hardness level documented at Marion and Lake County Floridan Aquifer discharge points, scale formation is not a hypothetical risk. It is an ongoing process that affects every water-using appliance in the home.
Water heater performance and service life: Scale deposits on water heater tank walls and heating elements act as insulation, forcing the element to work harder to heat the same volume of water. At hardness levels above 200 mg/L, scale accumulation shortens a tank heater's service life and reduces efficiency. Reverse osmosis membrane life: RO membranes are rated for a specific hardness range. Plumbing fixtures and showerheads: Calcium carbonate scale deposits on showerhead nozzles, faucet aerators, and dishwasher spray arms over months of use. The deposits restrict flow and are difficult to remove without acid descaling. Homeowners on very hard water typically notice this within 6 to 12 months of installation of new fixtures.
Soap and detergent efficiency: Hard water reacts with soap to form calcium and magnesium soap salts, which do not rinse cleanly and leave residue on skin, hair, and laundry. At Central Florida hardness levels, soap consumption increases measurably. The deposit commonly described as "soap scum" is a mineral-soap precipitate caused by hard water, not by soap quality.
Private wells vs. public water at similar hardness levels
Public water utilities in Central Florida draw from the same Floridan Aquifer but treat their water before distribution, including softening or blending to reduce hardness. Private well owners receive raw aquifer water with no treatment unless they install their own equipment. This is the core difference that makes water treatment relevant to Central Florida well owners in a way it is not for most city-water customers.
The Florida Department of Health's private well guidance at floridahealth.gov notes that private well owners are solely responsible for knowing and managing their own water quality. No state agency tests or treats private well water on the owner's behalf. Annual testing is the recommended baseline, with treatment decisions based on current test results rather than assumptions about what the aquifer delivers.
For testing context: a basic water quality test that includes hardness, pH, iron, total dissolved solids, nitrate, and bacteria covers the parameters most relevant to Central Florida well owners and gives the information needed to size any treatment equipment correctly. Installing a water softener without knowing current iron concentration, for example, risks fouling the softener resin if iron is elevated. Treatment options for very hard well water in Central Florida
Water softeners using cation exchange resin are the standard residential treatment for hardness. The resin exchanges calcium and magnesium ions for sodium ions, producing softened water that does not scale equipment or form soap scum. Sizing requires knowing the hardness level in grains per gallon and the household's daily water use. At Central Florida levels (typically 17 to 25+ gpg), softener sizing is not a calculation that transfers from a softer-water region.
For households where sodium is a dietary concern, potassium chloride regenerant is available as an alternative to sodium chloride. A reverse osmosis system at the kitchen tap removes both hardness minerals and sodium from drinking water regardless of which regenerant is used in the softener.
